Automotive electronics power up
[2] An integrated starter/alternator (ISA) in a 42-V system can produce enough torque to start a car. The result: the dc starter motor can be eliminated.
One design of an ISA employs a pancake-shaped ac induction motor mounted on the rear of the engine block. The stator [purple] is attached to the engine with an adapter that also provides cooling to the machine. The rotor is mounted to the engine crankshaft. The assembled unit fits quite compactly between the engine and transmission.
